xkelseyxgranerx asked:

I’m wondering why the vitamins are sold so that people are getting 1000 – 5000 % of their daily value. Why aren’t the vitamins sold as the amount that is set, the RDA? And why can vitamins be sold at such high doses that they are as high as or over the tolerable upper intake level, putting them at potential risk for toxicity?

Because your body does not absorb the vitamin pill as well as it absorbs vitamin/minerals from food sources. The pills give you extra as a “just in case” kind of thing.

The RDA is really only the minimum amount needed to prevent deficiency. In most cases extra vitamins will cause no harm even in mega doses, however, there usually is not real benefit to be derived from high doses of vitamins. The reason that high dose vitamins are available is that vitamins are regulated as food not as drugs. There is no requirement that foods be both safe and effective as in the case of drugs.
